The Upset in Seattle
It’s one of the most iconic photos in the history of Denver sports. On May 7, 1994, in overtime, the Nuggets completed their rally from an 0-2 series deficit to take down the Seattle SuperSonics, 98-94, for the first upset of an eight-seed over a one-seed in NBA history.
In the closing seconds of the series’ climactic Game 5, Dikembe Mutombo pulled in the last of his 15 rebounds, and as the clock hit zero, fell to the floor in one of the most indelible pictures imprinted on Denver’s memory. Clutching the ball and beaming from ear to ear, Mutombo cemented his place as an all-time Nuggets legend in just his third season.
Over 30 years later, that moment is still one of the defining ones of the city’s sports history. With the loss of Mutombo to brain cancer in September of 2024 at just 58 years old, we thought the upset deserved its own shirt. We put it in the Louvre-esque frame it deserves. And, just like the St. Mutombo shirt, we’ll be donating a portion of the proceeds from this shirt to the NBA Cares Foundation in Mutombo’s memory.
