One of the most beloved athletes of the last generation, Dikembe Mutombo first achieved legendary status in the Mile High City. In five seasons with the Nuggets, “Mt. Mutombo” was named to three All-Star Games, won a Defensive Player of the Year award, and led the league in blocks per game three times. He also was instrumental in leading the Nuggets to the first upset in NBA history of an eight-seed over a one-seed when Denver took down the Seattle SuperSonics in 1994.
Over 18 NBA seasons, Mutombo became one of the most recognizable athletes on earth with his philanthropy outpacing even his brilliance on the basketball court. The Congolese legend was a driving force in supporting public health initiatives and helped build hospitals in his home country and around the world.
He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015
In September of 2024, the gentle giant loved by the basketball and humanitarian worlds passed away at the age of just 58.
