The city’s longtime home for the NBA and NHL may have been utilitarian and not the most exciting arena on earth, but it was home. From 1975-99, McNichols Arena played host to the Nuggets and Avalanche but also Rocky Hockey, arena football, indoor soccer, women’s professional basketball, the first-ever NBA dunk contest, the 1990 Final Four, tons of concerts and countless memories. It was home to Alex English and Dikembe Mutombo and Patrick Roy and Joe Sakic. It was the drawing board for Don Cherry and Doug Moe. Elvis played there. So did Prince and Paul McCartney.
Now, it’s a parking lot. But for over a generation, it was home.
